Press release DRC

Statement on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

On 27 January 2025, following fighting around the city of Goma in the North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), non-government forces have taken control of the city. On 28 January, rioting related to the violence in the east broke out in parts of DRC’s capital, Kinshasa.

As a company with operations in the cities of Goma and Kinshasa, Africell is monitoring developments closely. We have three priorities: 1) the safety of our staff; 2) the operational continuity of our telecommunications network; and 3) minimising the commercial impact.

Actions we are taking include:

  1. Relocating team members to safe places away from the conflict zones from where they can continue to direct operations and maintain services for our customers
  2. Working with trusted and professional security providers to protect data centres, offices, warehouses and other facilities

Africell’s data, voice, SMS and mobile money services are running as normal in the rest of the country. Incidents reported in Kinshasa include a break-in to our office and other surrounding buildings. The incident at our office has been contained with the help with law enforcement. Critical infrastructure remains secure and operational.
